I received the text from Steven Peace, her coach, at 3:49 am PST…She won! Jill is a World Champion!
2015 UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships
With a kilometer left, Jill Walsh (Syracuse, New York) sprinted ahead to win by six seconds the women’s T2 road race, becoming a New World Champion!
Jill is a retired New York state trooper and mother to three children whose multiple sclerosis began to impact her ability to bike and run. However, she found she able to ride and compete in Paralympic cycling events on a trike. Jill came away with silver in the road race and bronze in the time trial in her first world championships last year. Hard to believe she has only been on a trike for less than a year at that time!
I started working with Jill earlier this year and could see from the start she had what it took to go all the way. I am not surprised at all that she came away from this event a new world champion. Not only is she an amazing athlete whom I have the pleasure of working with but I am pleased to call her my friend.
In edition to working with Jill, a couple other inspirational Team USA World Champions that I am honored to work with are:
- Jamie Whitmore (Mount Aukum, California) did not allow a crash on the first loop stop her. She was able to get back up, winning by more than a minute, and maintaining her C3 road race world title. This makes six world titles on the roads and an undefeated record at the road world championships since 2013.
- Shawn Morelli (Leavenworth, Kansas) raced to defend her world title and as usual for her, was the early leader of the C4 road race and won by more than four minutes.
